Art Equals Peace

It is actually very sad, and at the same time funny to be presenting papers, or conducting workshops on Peacebuilding through the Arts because Arts is really about peace-it has one and the same meaning, only the spelling is different. Yet, time and again, we have to convince other people, especially funding bodies that what we do is essentially peacemaking.

An example of how Art equals Peace is this experience I had when I attended the Flying Circus Project 2000 in Singapore. The 21-day workshop-interaction organized by Theatreworks, Ltd. based in Singapore gathered 75 dance, theatre, music, traditional, visual, and film artists all over Asia, many of who did not speak English. Of course there were translators. All the time, we were sitting on the floor in circles or semi-circles. There were sessions where we would listen to an artist resource person who would share his/her work. We would watch live performances, video shows, and slideshow presentations of these artists' works, after which, we would talk endlessly about the presentation, where we argued a lot. Some discussions became heated or boring enough for some of us to leave these sessions. The only time that we laughed together and felt our kinship and solidarity was when we performed together. These were the moments of pure peace and contentment. In the end, some of us who have become real friends agreed in one of our over-lunch tet-a-tets that whenever we opened our mouths to talk about an idea and try to convince the others about this idea, an argument ensues. But all philosophical and pedagogical differences are wiped out when we break into song or dance.

ART AS A RELATIONSHIP

Art is about reflecting your life, another person's life, or another creature's life on stage, on canvass, and in verses, the difference being an entire life is captured in a few moments of performance (theatre) and exposure (film), a few strokes (painting), or a few words (poetry).

But art as a mirror requires: 1) knowledge and understanding of the subject, and 2) communication. When you try to paint a stone, you are actually trying to understand what a stone feels like, where its curves lie, why it's chipped on one side. When a performer portrays the role of a devil or a dictator, s/he tries to put him/herself on that creature's shoes and tries to feel what that creature is feeling.

Art is about communication. When you paint a picture and hang it on the wall, people are bound to look at it and even try to analyze it. They may or may not get what you're trying to say, but the fact that people actually stop and look and try, if desperately, to understand that piece of work, is the beginning of real communication.

A lot of conflicts are the result of the lack of communication.

Artists project onto the canvas, or paper, or onstage their feelings and thoughts and philosophies about certain subject matters. When a child draws on paper what seems to be senseless, vigorous strokes of scratches and lines and endless circles, the child may be trying to say I am disturbed, I am angry, I am hopeless. An ordinary person seeing this piece of confused work is actually seeing a piece of art drawn by a child trying to say that his/her life is, indeed, confused.

ART AS A BLIND PERSON'S JOURNEY

Art is about magnifying or detailing certain things about life. Artists notice lots of things around us that "non-artists" don't. A blind person carries with him/her sensibilities and sensitivities akin to that of an artist. Because a blind person does not have visual references which to hang on to, all his/her other senses compensate for a visual disability by working double time, and twice over. So do artists. They are very keen at observing little things, mostly things that we take for granted, like cracks on walls, and a blade of grass bent in another direction.

As a non-blind person doing a blind person's journey, you are actually afraid to take a step forward because you are thrown in a different perspective, presented with a different point of view. A lot of biases and conflicts arise from very set beliefs, opinions, cultural patterns, and political frameworks borne out of years of social conditioning in the homes, in schools, on TV, in movies, etc. So when another point of view is presented to you-one that you have not experienced, the immediate reaction is resistance, a refusal to take that crucial first step forward and embrace that new space, that new dimension, in order to understand more comprehensively the world and how it works.

It is common to think of artists as free spirits, good-only-for-entertainment human beings. I was once invited to sing in a women's conference and I was introduced as an artist with no political stand or affiliations but they invited me because I was a woman and I knew a few women's songs. We have common mis-perceptions of artists as having no political backbone, when in fact many of our artistic creations-whether they are paintings of a fish or stars or flowers-are political. The images that we show are our political statements. "Nature is beautiful" is as much political as the statement "stop the war."

And with art, everything is beautiful. Even your anger, when expressed on a piece of paper, is a beautiful thing. In this sense, artists are, indeed, blind.

ART AS A TOOL FOR HEALING AND PEACEMAKING

In the olden days in some indigenous communities, two people expressed their anger for each other by chanting or playing the flute or some other instrument. Imagine a world where arguments are settled through song.

When we're really stressed out, angry, or depressed, we go out and watch a movie (film arts), we gormandize on food (culinary arts), we splurge on new clothes (fashion arts), we listen to classical or rock music (music arts).

Art is everywhere-it is as basic as food, without which we'd all be killing each other, which is what is happening now, because there isn't enough art to serve 70 million Filipinos, for example. To calm ourselves and make this world a "peaceful" place to live in, we kill those who make us angry. We kill over parking space. We kill over an uncooked dinner.

Because art has become inaccessible. You need money to watch a movie. You need money to buy food. You need money to buy clothes. You need money to buy a cd playern or an ipod. You need money to buy costumes and make-up and paint and canvasses and stage props. Poverty and inequity has reduced art into an activity available only to a select few. And those who have so much produce entertainment shows and other pseudo-art that reinforces poverty and inequity. And the cycle goes on.

PEOPLE AS PRODUCERS, RATHER THAN CONSUMERS OF ART

Herein lies the difference, the gap, and the greatest challenge for us all as peacemakers and peacebuilders. More often than not, we are consumers, rather than producers of art. But do you notice how children-especially poor children-are the best examples of art producers, yet little do we recognize their natural artistic talents? In the absence of money to buy toys, poor children create toys out of tin cans, stones, leaves, found objects-in adult terms, appropriate technology. This is their way of handling poverty. But this is not enough.

How we translate or elevate these natural talents into a conscious, institutionalized and programmatic art-making is the challenge for development workers and especially for government-so that art, which was once upon a time a language spoken by every member of the community, is reclaimed by every single human being as his/her own.

Imagine a world where every human being is an artist.

The Spanish Language

The Spanish language, due to its global importance, is one everyone knows a few words from whether if it is just hola or adios. However if you heard somebody talking about a language called "Castilian", what language would you think they were referring to? You would be forgiven for believing that they were referring to some little spoken dialect rather than the language that most people refer to as 'espanol'. Although people talk about the Spanish language, in actual fact there are many Spanish languages and of these, the official tongue is Castilian. Those who have developed an interest in the Spanish language realise that it is extremely intricate and varied according to where it is being spoken, not only in terms of continent, but also in terms of country.

When we hear Spanish referred to one of the Romance Languages, great images are instantly conjured up of the Spanish Conquest, Juan Carlos or even just sunny weather and idyllic landscapes, but what the phrase actually reveals is that Spanish is a language derived from Latin, and so shares some similarities in terms of grammar and vocabulary with other popular European languages such as French and Italian. It also reveals the fact that the language can be traced all the way back to the reign of the Roman Empire, and indeed, a brief reflection on the origins of the language takes us back almost 2,000 years when the beginnings of the language commonly recognised as Spanish began to take shape on the Iberian Peninsula. The only common feature of the Spanish language which can be solely attributed to Spain itself rather than to Rome is the character, which was probably developed by scribes as a shorthand way of writing a double n, and signifies that the n is to be rolled off the tongue in speech. For example, the Latin word annus' (year) Spanish equivalent is aos, and is pronounced 'an-yos'.

Nowadays, as well as Castilian, the Basque, Catalan and Galician languages are also frequently used in Spain. Those who speak these languages are reluctant to call them dialects because the term suggests some form of dependence on Spanish. Instead, they are recognised as languages in their own rights and the use of these different languages reflects distinct and sometimes much divided Spanish cultures. For example, in the Basque region of Spain, there are ongoing campaigns for independence and so the fierce protection of the language constitutes a significant symbol of the Basque people's ongoing plight. The Spanish language and its variations are not only contained to Spain itself, but as a result of the Spanish Conquest have been spread all over the world, notably across the Atlantic Ocean to Latin America where Spanish is spoken in Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and many more countries. Over 300 million people in the world today speak Spanish as their native language, although it is becoming more and more evident that English is invading the Spanish language, just as it has done to French recently. Buzz words and slang terminology are regularly found in Spain and Latin America, interjected into fast Spanish speech. To use just a few examples, the words 'bus stop,' 'marketing' and 'click' are now all widely used in the Spanish language, with the resulting mish-mash of words being branded as 'Spanglish.' People who take pride in the Spanish language are keen to limit the ways in which English is infiltrating their mother tongue, although whether the Spanish take the same extreme measures as recently seen in France in order to protect the quality of their language remains to be seen.

In terms of learning the language, it is often marketed in schools as being one of the easiest languages to pick up, mainly due to its natural rhythm and flow of words, for example the fact that as a general rule you are able to determine whether a noun is masculine or feminine by checking to see whether it ends in 'o' or 'a.' But the language is not without its complexities. For example, one of the first things students have to get to grips with is when to use the verb 'ser' and when to use the verb 'estar.' A quick look in the dictionary will confirm that both these verbs are defined as 'to be,' but 'estar' is used for temporary states, and 'ser' is used when a condition is permanent. For example, if I were to be describing my gender I would conjugate 'ser' and say "soy una chica" (note the feminine word's 'a' ending), whereas if I were to describe my mood I would use estar and say "estoy muy contenta" because a mood is likely to change over time. Spanish pronunciation is relatively easy, because you pronounce the letters you see. It must be noted however, that exact pronunciation depends on which part of the world you are in, and two native Spanish speakers can sound very different from one another. The pronunciation guide below is relative to Spanish as it is spoken in Spain.

Broadway Tickets

Few things are as exciting as Broadway shows. Broadway shows mean enjoyment and merriment in one of the most happening places in the world. With many enjoyable and fantastic plays and concerts running in its theatres, Broadway is a constant hub of activity always.

Broadway tickets can be obtained at ticket counters, ticket agencies, organizations, and brokers.

Research shows that almost 98% of all Broadway tickets are sold by ticket agencies like Tele Charge and Ticket Master. Such agencies usually sell tickets at face value and do not allow for any discounts. However, Tele Charge does have special ticket offers for some shows. Such tickets are only for students, seniors, and military people and have to be bought in person, showing relevant identity cards.

Ticket counters also sell discounted and normal-priced Broadway tickets. Discounted tickets like rush tickets and standing room only tickets are available for some selected shows only and sold on the day of the performance. Rush tickets are usually available within $20 to $25.

Usually Broadway tickets of popular shows run out very quickly. Broadway ticket brokers step in here and offer premium seats of those sold-out shows. They normally buy tickets from the public and other people and resell them. Hence, the tickets they offer always have a higher price than the value indicated on the tickets. Almost all genuine and good brokers are licensed members of the National Association of Ticket Brokers and other organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

Tickco Premium Seating, Tickets Now, Rave Review, Team One Tickets, Tickets.cc, Vivid Seats, BarrysTickets, Webtickets, and Gotickets are some ticket brokers who offer premium seats for almost all Broadway shows.

Discount tickets can be bought by different means. Discount codes on tickets; rush or lottery tickets; standing room only; and student, military, and senior discounts are some types of discount tickets which are available for different types of Broadway shows.

Discounts of nearly 40% to 50% on Broadway tickets are provided by certain companies such as Theater Mania, Playbill, Hitshow Club, Broadway Box, Tele Charge, New York TV Show Tickets, and TKTS among others.

Broadway Tickets provides detailed information on Broadway Tickets, Discount Broadway Tickets, Half Price Broadway Tickets, Broadway Ticket Brokers and more. Broadway Tickets is affiliated with Off Broadway Shows.

Music Review - Electric Colony

The CD Electric Colony (2007) was a nice surprise and well appreciated. One never knows what to expect when playing new music for the first time, and what a pleasant thing it is when the music turns out to be delightful, and intriguing too. A main aspect of the CD Electric Colony is this: the music abounds with a sincere upbeat motion, it is not still, and the music is eminently danceable because of that, a nice thing. Reminiscent of groups like Controlled Bleeding, and even Tones On Tail in places, Electric Colony also possesses an all important signature sound uniquely its own. I played the CD once, then twice, then just left it on all day. It is definitely worthy, it is definitely industrial, and it most definitely sounds good. Certain tracks (Returning Sun, Hazmat) have been composed with very metal-like attributes, adding yet another facet to an already enjoyable listening experience. Unlike some metal which is depressing and bizarre, the feel and sound of the Electric Colony metal riffs ring with power, creating a multiplex of busy audio constructs soaring upward into the clouds, and beyond.

Electric Colony is the primary commercial effort of Kris Summers, a solo indie musician and composer from Toronto, Ontario Canada. The CD Electric Colony seems to be about half instrumental work, with the rest exhibiting some very notable and interesting vocals (Descent II, About Time, more). Included throughout this initial solo work is some amazing and excellent guitar work by Kris, who respects and honors all of his equipment as if it were a part of himself, which in the reality of his music, it is.

Some recurring imagery I experienced as I became associated with the music: Majestic Space Scapes, The Tennessee River in July, An Airboat Ride, Violent Oceans and Seaside Thunderstorms, St. Marks Florida, Beautiful Girls, A Full Moon Rising, Everglades Sunsets, A Hard Won Mountaintop, Cydonia Plain. From the hopeful and well contrived "Nearly There" to the soundtrack-waiting-to-happen "No Mercy Shown", the breadth and scope of this solo musical effort is large and real, using sound to paint vivid pictures which in turn author stark and kicky emotion.

My favorite track so far is #7, entitled 7482784792; it is authoritative and intricate from the first beat, with meaning laid down in ever increasing complexity through out. Not only does 7482784792 evoke feelings and memories from another time and place within my latest incarnation, it also calls to something much deeper within my genetic psyche. It makes me feel good. Thanks for that. Thanks a lot. About Time II is my next favorite EC tune, and it is a straight up - get down - let it all shine out - piece of music. The vox and make-up of About Time II reminds me once again of the 80's band Controlled Bleeding, crossed with some of Al Jourgensens better efforts. Had I a tail, I would be wagging it. In fact, consider it done. Play that one loud, just as loud as you can.

Citing such influences as My Bloody Valentine, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend, and Sepultura (Among many Others), Electric Colony has created a sound which is not just a melding, or even synergy of those influences, but one step beyond all that, a new magnitude if you will, distinct, unique, gripping. This is all the more powerful once it is realized this is just the first offering from Electric Colony, with more on the way already. The astute listener may note some of the similarities to the music cited as influential to Electric Colony, and perhaps to some that's not, but none of those influences are overbearing or absolute: Electric Colony is well on its way to creating a difference that matters. That is the mark of talent with a refreshing twist, and Electric Colony certainly possesses that, and much more. If you are a fan of good Rock Music with a distinctly Industrial bent, don't miss out: get the CD Electric Colony and experience the new as it happens.

Leaders Who Made Music

Most American people are familiar with the fact the former President Bill Clinton played the saxophone, but there are many others famous leaders who played instruments too, including at least six other United States Presidents.

Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin played instruments during their free time off from building a nation. Patrick Henry played the flute and fiddle and Benjamin Franklin played the guitar and violin.

Thomas Jefferson, the third US President, was known for many things including the Declaration of Independence, the Louisiana Purchase, the lazy Susan, and the dumb waiter. He was also known to have played the cello, clavichord, and the violin.

John Quincy Adams, the sixth President, was known for the Monroe Doctrine, but he also was known to play the flute. Chester Alan Arthur, the twenty first US President, played the banjo. Woodrow Wilson, the 28th US President, created the League of Nations and played the violin. Harry Truman and Richard Nixon played the piano. Nixon also played the accordion.

Other famous leaders, Mahatma Gandhi, Sir Edward Heath, Ross Perot, and Condeleeza Rice also played or still play instruments. Mahatma Gandhi, peaceful leader of India's Nationalist movement, played the concertina. Sir Edward Heath, a former British Prime Minister, played the organ and was a conductor. Ross Perot, an independent candidate for US President, plays the accordion. Condeleeza Rice, US Secretary of State, plays the piano. At one time, she was even considering a career as a concert pianist.

Playing an instrument has been scientifically proven to improve focus, discipline, and study habits. It also acts as an outlet for creativity and stress release. There are many social benefits derived from playing an instrument. Being part of a band or orchestra provides camaraderie and teaches how to function as part of a group.

Can playing an instrument guarantee you an elected position? Of course not, but it may put you on the road to a successful career!

The Romantic Gift of Dance

From the beginning of time, dance has been a societal activity. Dancing in groups was popular and dances were open, no close proximity touching of partners. In the nineteenth century, about 1880, a dance, the tango, emerged in Buenos Aires. It was born in the poor areas and brothels of the city and made its way gradually into the upper class homes of the rich. Argentina was a very rich country and many of its inhabitants had vacation homes in Paris and London. They took the tango with them when they went abroad.

The origin and meaning of the word tango appears to have come from an African word. Its translation by Europeans and others in the Americas was "a closed space where Negroes gather to dance" and then later the name of the dance.

The tango that was born in the brothels of Argentina had overt sexual undertones and many considered it vulgar. As it moved from class group to class group, the dance changed. The main ingredient of the dance, the connection between the two partners, did not change. It evolved into a more sensuous, acceptable form in society. If you watch ballroom dancing competitions, you will see the tango performed by the contestants. This is a diluted version of the dance.

Dancing itself is a romantic activity. When you dance, you are in close proximity of your partner. You move for and with each other. A truly romantic gift for Valentine Day is Argentine Tango lessons for the two of you. After you have learned the dance, create a romantic setting for the two of you:

  • Create an invitation for your loved one, inviting them to dinner and dance.
  • Purchase a CD of your favorite tango music.
  • Prepare a meal of their favorite food.
  • Add candles and flowers to the table.
  • Use your best china, silverware, and crystal.
  • Push back the furniture in the living room for dance space.
  • Eat your romantic dinner.
  • Dim the lights.
  • Work off your romantic dinner by dancing the Argentine Tango.
  • End your evening of romance in a way that suits the two of you.

The Argentine Tango is one of the most sensuous and romantic dances in the world. Each partner must concentrate and focus on the presence, the body, and the emotions of their partner. They must feel each other. The Argentine Tango is a dance in which the partners can express their desire and longing for each other.

What a truly wonderful romantic gift for Valentine Day or any time of the year.

How do I become a Mobile DJ?

The Pro's (and woes!) of becoming a Mobile D.J!

So how do you become a Mobile D.J?, easy!, just call yourself one!. There are no diploma's or qualifications and no graduation ceremony. However the time may come where you are called upon to demonstrate your D.J'ing skills and often this will be in front of 100's of people at your first gig. Entertaining such a a large number of people can be a very daunting and nerve racking task.

Not just music and flashing lights

Mobile D.J'ing is different to club or radio D.J'ing. Just spending a fortune on the very latest equipment and latest chart music won't make you a successful D.J or get you re-booked. Being a Mobile D.J is also about being an entertainer, rather then just being a Jukebox surrounded by lots of pretty lights!. You will also have to play a lot of music genres which you may not otherwise choose to listen to by choice.

A successful D.J is one who plays to his or her Audience, who can break the ice at difficult functions and who isn't out to satisfy their own ego's. Most D.J's learn to "read" the audience, and are frequently watching the dancefloor to gauge what music will work next. At Mobile Functions such as Weddings, your audience may take some time to get onto the dancefloor and this is where Microphone work is important in order to break the ice, make your audience feel welcome and encourage them onto the dancefloor.

Where and how can I learn D.J skills and get advice?

Some people simply may not be cut out to D.J. Others may pick up the skills in a few months, others may take a year or longer. There is no hard or fast rule to learning the basics. The best, and often the most successful route to becoming a D.J is by helping another D.J at weekends.

Consider volunteering your services to another D.J locally. Helping out as a "Roadie" may not be financially rewarding but you are essentially learning new skills for free, which would cost you 100's on a course. Most D.J's will often cover your expenses and refreshments, some may even pay you, in return for your help, but don't expect to live off it, after all they are doing you a favour by teaching you a trade, and sharing their knowledge.

Learning to D.J by becoming a Roadie is the fastest way to learn the business and by actually watching another Professional D.J at work can teach you more than in a classroom or College environment. Most D.J's themselves got into the business this way, so don't be afraid to ask.

What music will I need?

This is entirely dependant on the type of functions which you are attending. Most Mobile DJ's will set themselves up to cover all types of functions from Childrens' Parties to 75th Wedding Anniversaries, and this means playing music to all age groups. Ideally you will need to invest in virtually all types of Genres. Rock & Roll, 1960's, 1970's, Disco, Funk, Soul, Motown, 1980's, 1990's as well as the latest chart and club dance music.

If you are setting yourself up as a specialist DJ, offering services for one age group or type of function, then this will be a lot easier to fund and build a music collection. However you may wish to gauge the demand for that type of music and DJ in your area.

What Equipment do I need to buy?

Again it's not the equipment which entertains, it's the D.J. By having the latest equipment it won't make you any better as a D.J. It is possible to start up on a budget of 1000, which will get you a sound system and a few lighting effects. If your budget won't stretch to this, then you may need to consider buying 2nd hand or hiring the equipment. More information on choosing equipment is covered on another article.

Any good reason to start off by helping another D.J, is that you gain the experience and also find out if D.J'ing suits you BEFORE spending a lot of money and committment on buying equipment.

Buying a comprehensive music library is far more important than how much lighting you have, and should be your first consideration. You can build up your lighting, and upgrade your sound system (if required) once the work starts coming in to justify it.

What else do I need?

Committment, dedication and enthusiasm is a must. As is patience and a good sense of humour. By definition, most Mobile D.J's work the weekends, so if you get a good reputation and a full diary, you may have to cut down on your own personal social activities, and this can also put a strain on relationships, so make sure your partner / spouse is also agreeable!.

From a professional prospective, you should also obtain some level of PLI (Public Liability Insurance), as a business within the UK it is a requirement to have some minimum level of insurance cover in order to protect you in the event of causing harm to a third party through accident or neglect. The amount of PLI cover required varies from 2 million to 10 million. You may find that 2 Million cover is adequate for your area, although some hotel chains may insist on a minimum of 5 million to work at their venues.

You may be asked to produce evidence of your PLI cover before being allowed to set up in some Hotels, and Council run establishments, so it is wise to get cover sooner, rather than later.

How about a D.J Course or Workshop?

These are few and far between especially in the UK, and usually aimed at teaching you beatmixing or turntable skills, which are of little use to the Novice Mobile D.J. If you are aiming for club work, then you may find a course to be of interest, however these courses have limited use on the Mobile Circuit.

D.J courses can cost between 100 and 1000s ($100 - $3000). Like any industry there are risks, so it is important to find out exactly what the course involves and whether the information is of any value to you before parting with your money!. Some courses may of little use, others may teach you the basics find out exactly what each one offers and weigh up the benefits to you.

If you are still in education and want to find a list of official College / University courses on further education opportunities in media, radio, stage and technical then ask at your High School for further information.

Spanish in the Real World

In our increasingly shrinking global world learning other languages seems like a natural progression. Speaking a second language acts as a window to a wider world. Specifically, becoming a Spanish as well as an English speaking member of the United States would yield both academic and cultural results while giving you a broader array of opportunities.

Spanish as a language has a foothold and a very bright future here in the United States. After English, Spanish is the second most common language in the United States. The influx of Spanish speaking immigrants from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Mexico has greatly increased the number of Spanish speakers in the U.S.. Traditionally, an immigrant's original language tends to become reduced through generational assimilation. However, of the U.S. Hispanics only 9% speak English only. 50% of second generation immigrants speak Spanish at home. According to the US Census, the Latino population is expected to account for 44% of the nation's growth over the next 25 years.

The number of Spanish newspapers, magazines, publishers, local television stations and programs in the United States are constantly increasing. We are seeing trilingual labeling of products as a standard and bilingual labeling in public facilities becoming more commonplace. It is very safe to assume that Spanish will remain firmly in the number two spot for years to come. So, I think I have made my case as to the significance of Spanish in our country! Now I will move on to point out the personal benefits of learning to speak the language.

Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn. Spanish is Latin based as are French and Italian. Russian and German also have some characteristics that are present in Spanish but not in English. Therefore if you can learn Spanish you have a head start at grasping other languages as well.

Much of the vocabulary of the English language has Latin origins. Therefore, learning Spanish could improve your English vocabulary as well. Studying a language involves thinking about how the language is structured. It is likely that while you are learning about how verbs are used in Spanish you may gain a greater understanding of English verbs' tenses and moods.

Connecting with our neighbors and cultural understanding is a huge benefit of learning Spanish. You most likely have or will have a Spanish speaking neighbor or co-worker. Communication is priceless. We gain so much from interacting with others and a language barrier greatly decreases the quality of any interaction. Spanish culture is also distinctly different from American culture. It is interesting and inspirational to become familiar with other customs, foods, histories and people. In some areas where the Latino population is a significant portion of the populous, learning Spanish is simply a way to participate fully in the life and culture of your environment.

Traveling to Spanish speaking countries is an entirely different experience when you speak the language. So many more doors are opened and opportunities presented!

Lastly, employment opportunities expand greatly by knowing Spanish. Medicine, education, international trade, communications and tourism are examples of professions that may require their applicants to be bilingual. And being that so many of our citizens are Spanish speaking there isn't a profession that could not benefit from having a bilingual employee. It will put you above other non Spanish speaking applicants hands down.

Resources are plentiful for materials that teach Spanish. There are a plethora of choices of learning methods. There are instructors and home based courses at every level imaginable and in all different forms. There are audio exercises you can practice while you drive or at the gym. There are conversation classes. There are internet based activities and educational computer games. A second language is mandatory in most grammar school curricculums throughout the U.S.. I strongly advise choosing Spanish although other languages are offered!

We are living in an increasingly shrinking global world. Learning to speak a second language is a logical progression. Becoming a Spanish as well as an English speaking member of the United States would broaden your array of opportunities both personally and professionally.

How to Pick a Song for Your Father-Daughter Dance At Your Wedding

Sometimes it can be hard to pick one Father-Daughter Dance song for you wedding that really encompasses how you and your dad feel about each other. He's your hero. You're his little girl. You both have so many memories of you growing up. The first time you rode a bike on your own. The first time you planted your little feet and wouldn't back down in an argument against him. The first time you realized that there was a possibility that he may just know what he's talking about. The first time he realized that you knew what you were talking about. And now you're all grown up and getting married. There are a lot of emotions and memories that will be floating around your minds in the space of that one song.

When thinking about the song you want to use for the Father-Daughter Dance, a great place to start is to do a web search. There are a lot of websites that you can go to that have a list of the most popular songs for the Father-Daughter Dance. Just reading through the titles can bring tears to your eyes. The most popular songs for this special dance are so popular for a very good reason. Every one of them encompass the feelings of love, pride and admiration that a father and daughter feel for one another. Any of these songs are always a wonderful choice.

If sentimentality isn't something you and your dad are comfortable with, or you just don't think you'd be able to handle such deep emotions one more time on your wedding day without bursting into tears, think about doing something different. Some fathers and daughters choose to do something other than a classic slow dance for their Father-Daughter Dance. Think back over the years. Is there a song that your dad really loves, or a song that represents something you and your dad both really enjoy? If you and your dad share a love of the ocean or are avid surfers, maybe a Father-Daughter Dance to an old 1960's surf song. Maybe there's a song from that school play back in high school that he helped you practice for hours? Or maybe he's an Elvis man. There are a lot of different songs and styles of music that can be just as touching and sentimental as a classic Father-Daughter Dance song. It doesn't have to be a slow song to be just as much of a reflection of your love and admiration of one another.

Taking a few dance lessons to put a little bit of polish on some rusty dancing shoes can be a lot of fun for both of you. With a little bit of practice, you and your dad can turn a classic Father-Daughter Dance song into a beautiful waltz, or you can have a whole routine built around his favorite classic rock song.

No matter what kind of song you and your dad use for the Father-Daughter Dance at your wedding, the most important thing is for you and your dad to enjoy yourselves and really cherish this special moment that you have to spend together.

Learning to dance is the same as any new skill. It takes patience and practice. Unlike other skills though, learning to dance is fun at every stage. Yes, it becomes more fun the better you get, but all beginners in my lessons have fun right away.

So if you are having fun right away, imagine how much fun you have when you can move your body confidently on the dance floor. Dancing really is a great way to get fit, meet people, improve your confidence and have fun. For private or wedding dance lessons visit my site: http://www.dancevogue.com.au/

What You Should Know About Free Movie Downloads

With all of the entertainment download sites out there that offer FREE movies, music, games etc., those tempting offers of free downloading and sharing have you wondering which site is the best, but first and foremost one should use caution in choosing, since many of these Peer to Peer sites are free but also illegal and dangerous to the health of your computer.

Wondering Why? I'll explain below. So please read on!

Peer to Peer (P2P) Networks are basically computers on the same network with certain software sharing files for free. The problem with this, although tempting concept, is that you may also be sharing Malware, Viruses, Spyware that can damage your computer, not to mention you can get into some big trouble downloading copyrighted material.

If you do frequent p2p sites for downloading your movies and music and whatever else, anti-virus software should help in holding off any worms or viruses but with no guarantee. You would still be risking your computer to infection and or damage. You would also be adding to some real disturbance in the entertainment business with big fines and big court costs for illegal distribution of copyrighted material, sometimes known as Bootlegging.

There are alternatives that are safe and legal.... membership sites offer this alternative, no worries for just a low one time fee. A good membership site also will not charge you a pay per download fee or even monthly fee just a one time fee with unlimited downloads. Yet there are many to choose from also. Just please do your research and learn as much as you can about the website you are considering and the software they are using for file sharing, this is crucial. We have done some research for you and reviewed a number of sites that are a few of the best out there, but most of all, Legal and Safe...no worries.

In your quest finding something that is right for you there are some other considerations that come to mind. Download speed, even from the best site is mostly dependent on your internet connection, Dialup vs. DSL vs. Highspeed Cable and on it goes. But with a good download accelerator software program most connections should work fine. Another tip would be your hard drive space, meaning the room needed to store all your favorite movies, music, and whatever else. That can be cured by burning copies onto the media of your choice CD, DVD, External HD and deleting the original off the drive or install a hard drive with more space.

If your still reading, I just want to say thanks for your time and sticking with me this far and hopefully this article was of some help to you.

Sincerely J. D.

J. D. is an avid movie fan and collects movies of all genre's. He is also a successful business manager and author of Movie Download Website Review. To read his Reviews on the best membership movie sites and more, please visit: http://downloadmoviereviews.blogspot.com/

Could You Live The Life Of A DJ

So you love music and you want to be a DJ. Well before
taking the plunge there are some things you need to
know about how to become a DJ.

Since there is no such thing as a DJ school to teach
you the steps one of the first things you need to know
is that you need to be original and if possible new in
your talent and technique. Talk to other DJ's if you can
and find out how they broke into the business and get
some tips from them. See if they will take you on as an
apprentice so that you can learn.

A person that aspires to be a disk jockey needs to have
a lot a charisma because other than the music a really
good DJ that has appeal is what draws the crowds. So
develop a character personality that attracts crowds.
You need to know when to tune it down as well so that
you do not overpower and lose that attention.

As a DJ you have to be knowledgeable in all genre of
music, just knowing a few hit songs here and there won't
cut it. So you need to make sure to brush up on your musical
intellect by learning about all types of music. The way to
learn the music it is to listen to it...even if it is not
what you personally enjoy, a DJ has to know and have a
lot of music.

Now, you need to realize that being knowledgeable in all
music doesn't mean that you will play all music. You
will need to develop your own style as well. You need
to work on a certain niche of music lovers and be able
to entertain with the right music, whether it be rock, rap,
soul or house music.

You need to have good quality music, so if you are downloading
it from the Internet, make sure that you are using legal sites
to get it from so that you are getting the best quality.

Plan on either renting or possibly borrowing the equipment that
you will need until you are comfortable with being a DJ. The
last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on expensive
equipment and then find you don't enjoy it as much as you thought you would.
Then ask some friends if you can DJ a party of two for them
for free so you can get your feet wet and see how the crowd
reacts.

An important key you need to remember is that you should
base the music you play on the crowd that you are entertaining.
In other words, don't play rap for a group of elderly
people and don't place bluegrass for a bunch of rockers or rappers.

Learning how to DJ can be a lot hard work as well as fun.
So get out there and make your way in the world of music
and don't forget to have fun while you're at it.

Top DJs don't just play the music they become the dance floor, when they move the crowd moves few other professions in the world can make you feel that buzz...do you want it... get the help you need at http://www.startdjing.com

Ah, broken chords. The sound. The cascading pattern of chordal notes. It's beautiful. There's no doubt about it. And this technique is one of the easiest to learn. After all, all you need to do to create it is have a chord under your fingers and be able to "break it up."

What do I mean by break it up? You've probably heard of solid chords. This is when all tones are heard at once. For example, if I finger a C Major triad and play all three keys at once, I'm playing a solid chord. But, if I break this chord up into it's 3 notes and play them one at a time you get a broken chord.

Broken chords are used frequently in New Age piano music. There's something about playing notes of a chord in broken style that's very appealing. Maybe it's because it makes the piano sound fuller. Or it could be that it just sounds lovely.

Now, let's take a look at how we can easily create it.

In the lesson "Reflections in Water," we have 4 open position chords. These chords are ideal for "breaking up" because they are so wide-spaced. Over two octaves of notes lay under your finger tips. Once we finger this chord position we are able to play the broken-chord style. How? By simply letting your fingers play around with the note possibilities! And there are many of them.

When you listen to me play this piece, you'll notice that it's nothing to write home about. That is, I'm not after a "sophisticated" sound here. I'm just gently playing around with the notes and using the element of time to create a calm ambiance. And it works! The notes float out into the air and music is created. Not by planning or trying to come up with material but by following a few simple guidelines and letting go of the need to control the outcome.

Should You Choose a DJ Or a Band? (Or Both!)

The music is such a great part of any wedding reception. After the seriousness of the ceremony, it is fun to get everyone out on the dance floor and get the party going. The type of music that you choose will set the mood for the reception, and so the question is, should you choose a d.j. or a band?

The answer will depend in several factors, including your budget, the formality of your wedding, and the type of music that you like. Usually a d.j. is less expensive than a band (although sometimes you can find affordable live music by hiring students from a music college.) If you love the big band sound, then a nine piece combo would be a great choice. Couples who want to dance the night away to the latest hits would be better off finding a great d.j. And if you like both, then consider hiring a band for the beginning of the reception and then have a d.j. take over for late night fun.

The setting and formality of your wedding should also be considered when deciding on music. If you are hosting an informal afternoon outdoor wedding, you would choose something entirely different than for a black tie wedding in an opulent ballroom. It makes sense that a more relaxed wedding should have less traditional music. For instance, a bride who is going to be wed barefoot wearing a cotton dress and unique keshi pearl handcrafted bridal jewelry might consider a folksy sort of band. The bride in the full satin ball gown with elaborate Swarovski crystal handcrafted bridal jewelry will find that a more traditional orchestra playing the standards is more appropriate for her reception.

One good reason to choose a d.j. instead of a band is for the variety of songs that they can play. If you want to hear a mix of music styles that will appeal to guests of all ages, a d.j. can deliver that. It is very important to give your d.j. a list of songs that you definitely want him to play (especially the song for your first dance), and a list of songs that is forbidden. Be very clear on where you stand on the Electric Slide and the Chicken Dance!

It is the job of the bandleader or d.j. to introduce the newlyweds when they enter the reception for the first time. One thing to decide before hiring musicians is whether you want them to say anything more than that. Do you like the type of d.j. who keeps up a witty patter throughout the evening, or do you prefer your musicians to play the music but not to speak? Make sure to make your preference known when you are auditioning d.j.s or bands.

Speaking of the audition, it is very important that you hear the band or d.j. before signing a contract. It is usually possible to poke your head into another event that they are playing before you make your choice. You might think that this is not a big deal for a d.j., but you want to be certain that his style matches yours. Also, it may give you an opportunity to check out the sound of his equipment. I once attended a wedding where the d.j.'s speakers sounded just awful. Luckily, there were two bars set up at that reception, so the guests were sufficiently cheerful that the sound quality did not bring the evening down!

In contrast to poor sound, a really great band will make your reception even more fun and memorable. Another wedding that I went to had a really talented and versatile band that could play everything from swing to the hora to the theme song from The Simpsons (the couple made their entrance to that music!). Not only could they handle a wide variety of styles, but they played them all extremely well. It added a lot to the evening. If you have certain special requests of the band, as this couple did, it is important to find a band that is up to the challenge. It would not do, for instance, to have a Jewish wedding reception without a really great version of the hora dance.

Sometimes there are other reasons why a bride and groom will decide in favor of a band or a d.j. For example, I have always thought that people in very formal clothing looked a bit silly dancing to songs like The Macarena, so I chose a band that played the classics like Frank Sinatra and Cole Porter. Another couple, though, may love exuberant music, and so a d.j. would be the perfect option for their wedding. It all comes down to the personal preference of the bride and groom, and what tone they want for their reception.
