"If you die your son will be like us. Fatherless." From a film-makers point of view, this film is a daunting task. It has many characters but still grasps your attention. There are so many very good foreign language films nowadays. I thought Tsotsi was top notch and now, City of Men. I mean, wow! The characters in the film are young men involved in gangs, carefully woven in their anger and paranoid youth is a sense of dread and being doomed. Excellent drama. This is a must watch for anyone who's remotely interested. There will be a scene where you will laugh really really hard. There's a little kid in the film that you'll want to cuddle. You'll never want to live the character's life though. Also ... it actually made me think about something most men don't ever think of. It's about fatherhood. Before I become incoherent, I'll just end by saying, this film is going to do really well and is a must must watch. Thankyou for reading.

This series does not follow the exact story or timeline as the movie City Of God but it takes place in Rio de Janeiro in the Favela. I was entertained and pleased with the acting, cinematography, and realness. I almost felt that I was there and I could have been there in my younger years.

THE POSTAL SERVICE - THREE SINGLES - T-SHIRT

We know what Anorexia looks like, right? A 5'4" woman, weighing 80 pounds
will stand in front of a mirror gazing at her image and will see FAT!

To her eyes, as she stands in front of the mirror, examining every inch
of her body, her body weighs 250 pounds.

Anyone else; ANYONE ELSE sees the reality of her weight which is 80 lbs. Her skeleton is clearly observed below the skin surface, which has such little mass, that to the objective observer, this woman appears malnourished and maybe even close to dying.

The only conclusion that can be drawn is that this woman is seeing a distorted image of her body that no one else, I mean NO ONE ELSE sees.

And that's her illness!

The cure, if there is ever is one, is several weeks in an institution where the "patient" is taught to rely on and perhaps even trust what OTHERS are seeing, and not his/her own reflection in a mirror.

Once the patient is helped to understand that his/her view of their body is not real, but a distorted mental image, (sort of what we look like when we see ourselves in one of those "Fun House" mirrors at the amusement park), then the patient starts to see him/herself through more objective eyes, and ultimately see the truth of the matter...the truth that he or she has not been able to see...
that she weighs 80 lbs., not 250.

Well, how does this relate to what I call "Vocal Anorexia"?

It's simply this:

"Vocal Anorexia" is a condition where a singer will hear the sounds that
emit when he/she sings a song that NO ONE ELSE hears.

Take the case of the people who audition for American Idol. They will sing...
badly...excruciatingly awful.

Simon will say, "Do you think that was good?", and they will reply, "Yes! I was great!" However, to
everyone else, judges and viewers alike, they were about as terrible as they could be.

What's going on? The person is hearing something that is not real; sounds that objective listeners hear as unpleasant and even painful to hear.

And I know this because I've had students like this in my studio, and believe me, they CANNOT hear how bad they sound. They remain under an illusion that they sound great...a false illusion!

The only person who does not hear how bad it is, is the person singing. And that's an illness. It takes hours, months, maybe even years of ear training for a person with this affliction to improve their singing. Some will discover that what they believed to be a passion was a temporary whim, much like passing a store window and seeing an outfit and thinking to oneself, 'Oh, I gotta have THAT!',only to have it replaced by another "want" a few days later.

The pitch-challenged singer with a real desire to sing will do the work no matter how long it takes, and perhaps end up in the chorus of a Broadway show, or get good enough to perform at the local Karaoke club for friends and family.

Tone Deafness, for the most part, is often "fixable" with commitment and hard work. Less than 1% of the planet's population is truly tone deaf. The others just have something called "lazy ear".

But that's another article altogether. Back to "Vocal Anorexia".

There's a rather curious aspect of vocal anorexia that, to me, is much more intriguing, to say the least.

I have encountered numerous singers who will sing a song, and sound exquisite, simply wonderful. The vocal tone, the expression of the lyric, the entire performance could make one melt,
but to the singer's ear, it sounds frightfully horrendous.

If this singer is told how wonderful he/she sounds, it translates in the singer's brain as, "They're just being nice", or "They didn't hear all the mistakes, so they don't know".

The same inability of the anorexic patient to SEE what is plain as day to an objective eye is apparent
here as the anorexic singer cannot HEAR what is clearly beautiful to the objective listener.

And the solution to this "affliction", is the same. Since it's not a HEARING issue, but a mental one, the anorexic singer needs to learn how to hear him/herself through others ears and not his/her own.

This takes discipline and a continuous inner conversation where the singer must repeat often, "What I am hearing is not real. I will not judge my singing or rely on my own listening for it is flawed by my condition."

This is what Martha Graham was saying to her student, Agnes DeMille in a letter she wrote as a response to Miss DeMille's self-criticism of her work.

Agnes DeMille, for those of you who do not know, was the choreographer for the first Broadway production of "Oklahoma".

She became so critical of her own work that she almost quit, but instead wrote to her mentor, Martha Graham, for some advice.

And this is an excerpt of the note she got back. I strongly recommend that you read it SLOWLY, making sure you understand every word, especially if you feel that you may be one of those who suffer from vocal anorexia.

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated
through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time.
This expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist
through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it.

It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it
compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours
clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.

This is a wonderful book of popular songs in Spanish, which my triplet boys latched onto immediately. The songs are very engaging, and each page has lovely artwork. I speak Spanish, and my boys were born in Spain. I have been trying very hard to help them maintain a little Spanish, and this book has been very helpful. It doesn't come with a CD, but you can easily learn the tunes of the songs if you know how to read music. And even if you only speak rudimentary Spanish, I think it's possible to learn the songs and enjoy them. This book quickly became the boys' favorite bedtime routine. I hear them singing the songs during the day as well. I highly recommend it.

The story of dancing in Cuba

In Cuba, as in ancient times, dance tells its own story. The passion and energy of Cuban dance reveals the strength and conviction of the Cuban people, determined to enjoy life despite 'la lucha' (the struggle) of living in a strictly regulated country where the average monthly wage comes in at around 400 pesos - less than 10.

Tips for Cuban Salsa dancing

Their remarkable twisting body movements and natural sense of rhythm will dazzle you.

If you have the right technique, Cuban Salsa is easier to learn than many other forms of dance. The basic footwork is a fairly simple walking motion, pausing every fourth beat, and there are some six basic steps you can follow to make sure you're on the right tracks.

1 Relax

To dance Cuban Salsa well it is important not to rush, but to relax into the steps. Movements should be precise and deliberate in addition to being flowing and smooth.

2 Walk with purpose

Salsa dancing involves a continual circular motion. Couples walk around each other with an imaginary axis between them. This makes turns look smooth and effortless. Walking gives time to untangle your arms after each turn.

3 Have confidence in your lead

The leader (usually the man) should have constant tension in his arms, while his hands guide his Salsa dancing partner around the floor. There is no need to clamp onto each other's hands, only to use the right amount of tension to provide a leading signal.

4 Be flexible when following

In order to follow well, ladies should try to match the tension of their partner. The exception to this is when arms need to be relaxed and flexible to complete arm-twisting Salsa moves without injury!

5 Keep balanced when you spin

The key to all the spectacular spins in Salsa is not to lose your balance. One way to do it is by spotting while you spin - focussing on one spot at each turn - an age-old dance technique.

6 Use your body

In Salsa dancing, ladies should make use of their body and be sensual, playful and creative. This can involve some creative arm movements, going with what feels right and basically showing off a bit. Enjoy!

Music marketing is by and large difficult for most artists, that is something we need to realise. Marketing yourself, being confident to allow people to listen to your tracks and most importantly, handling criticism takes a bit of time to get used to. In the majority of cases though, marketing plans do fail. you may have a great sounding track, but if it is not marketed properly then it will just be white noise.

However all is not lost.

The main reasons why music marketing fails is that 1) there is always some money involved, and 2) we market our music.

They all sound a bit strange I know, but my plan is for you to get over these hurdles and to get your music out there without any hassle. I will take each of the above points in turn, but remember they are interlinked:

1) Money marketing. This is bad. The economics of this is so: you have to sell slot of tracks to get back the amount you spent on marketing, then you need to sell a few more to make any profit. The problems is, why are we spending so much money on music marketing, or, why are we spending any money on marketing at all?! The Internet has greatly reduced the cost of marketing by 100%. Yep, marketing should be free, then any tracks that you do sell is pure profit. There are so many music marketing strategies, some of which are simple ideas that are not being utilised.

Here are some fantastic free marketing strategies are not being used, at all. How about leaflet distribution, flyers, making a mailing list then advertising your new tracks on that (they already like your tracks because they have signed upto your mailing list). Applying to competitions will always bring in some much needed traffic as competitions generate 1) leads and interest from the host site, 2) your tracks will get viral marketed especially if it has become in the top 3. Viral marketing is just another way of spreading interest, all the people who voted for your tracks will recommend the great track that they heard, and you name spreads. 3) You can always advertise the fact that you got in first, second or third in X competition (always state how many other competitors were there as well- coming third out of four entries is nothing to promote really).

Surely the ultimate advertising strategy is...give away your MP3s for FREE! A simple technique that promotes your tracks. People then trust you, they love quality items, they assume then, "hmm, if this is free, and it's good, what would his selling tracks be like?" Free stuff sells pay goods, fact. Give away alot of free stuff...MP3s being the main one, and then be patient.

Once you have finished your free marketing, start again. Just keep on promoting yourself by free processes. It gets your name banded around, people will see your Webpage link and click on it increasing your traffic. It might not too successful in the first few months or maybe even a year, but stick with it, gaining visitor confidence will ultimately prevail.

2) The above is great, but why would anyone buy any track from you in the first place? To most surfers you are faceless, they don't see you on the music videos, so why should they buy anything from you?

Harsh words I know, I'm sorry, but it is true. That is the real reason why there are thousands of good groups and artists out there in Internet land marketing away, spending cash and showing nothing for it. They marketed first, wanting cash, and their visitors are literally saying "I don't think so". You then become the banner ad- looks really good, but never gets the click.

What you need to do is create content within your site. Simple as that. Without content you are just another site that the visitor has no real reason to come back to. Content also increases the chances of you being picked up by the search engines. Please note:Google, and the other big search engines have stated that their thousands of calculations per site includes content search. This is a fundamental statement, even if you are a music site giving away your MP3s.

If you have ever looked for MP3s within the search engines, there are about 6 million sites dedicated to the term MP3. Now, your one site has to be found by a visitor, the chances are very low. However, if your site has content focused keywords, such as "good guitar riffs", "how to gig" etc, then you will be picked up much easily than a simple MP3 search. Within the various pages that you have created you put, "download free guitar MP3s" or something that suits your music, and you then advertise your MP3s through the "back door". Content will also bring back the visitors, they love a site that they are interested in, they sign up to your news-letter, and then you email them with new updates, your new MP3s etc. Then you start to create your own little buzz, you create people willing to listen to your tracks.

A sideline to content is always relevant, up-to-date content. Offering tapes with your tracks on is music marketing suicide. I have seen these actually being offered on some websites. Offering a tape states that 1. You are not up-to-date hence your sounds won't be, 2. You are offering poor quality, hence your tracks won't shine, and 3. You have to pay out for the tape (postage and packaging etc). People on the Internet want things now, not tomorrow, offering MP3s, even short WAV files is giving the visitor what they want- immediate access to your tracks.

Relevant content is just as important as current content. If you have a rock website stick to rock related web pages. If I was into hip-hop I wouldn't go onto your rock site and look at hip-hop related articles. Obvious I know, but scarily this has been done. It also has another effect. The search engines see topic specific sites as just that, topic specific. If you stray away from your chosen topic it will not look good for you with the engines. They will see that your relevance has reduced and so to will your page ranking.

Content is not that easy to accomplish. It comes with time, you need to tweak, track whether that has done any good to your traffic or click throughs. You could also just be writing alot of drivel. Content needs to be "Search Engine Focused", you need to honestly persuade people to buy from you, you need to have a one to one style (like you are talking to a friend), and definitely not be boring. Nearly forgot, you need to assess who your audience is. Are they young, middle aged, technophobic? You writing style should cater for your audience. For example, a younger audience will like more colour, more tech information, a friendly banter, and up-to-date chart acts. Generally if you write as you would talk to a friend then you will be on safe lines.

The next dance craze is bachata, a Dominican dance. Many people have been dancing it incorrectly. Since it's a very close romantic dance, most people dance it in a grinding way. It's not! You can grind during merengue, house, hip-hop and even lambada, but please don't grind during bachata!

There is big difference between gyrating and grinding. Bachata is NOT grinding! I have been trying to figure out why some women avoid dancing bachata. They think it's a freak dance. They think it's perversive. Being a bachata teacher that I am, I take offense with this notion. Any bachata teacher that teaches such false gospel should stick to house and hip-hop.

Grinding involves pelvises. And sometimes crotches. Also, back ends. Take two persons; add hormones, romantica music and lots of friction and you get the point. This dance is called "Freak Dancing," not bachata!

Yes, If you have taken my classes and workshops, I have always emphasized leading from the hips, and that, you must do when you are both close to each other. If you are a good leader, your hips along with your partner's, naturally and automatically, move in unison. If you are grinding, you are doing it wrong!

Bachata is not frottage!

On the other hand, I love the gyration of the hips because this type of movement is accepted since the beginning of dancing. It is one good expression of dancing. Some dancers perform it while dancing solo (merengue or salsa shines), or they gyrate with their partners in unison!

Now If I ever see you in the clubs again grinding to bachata, I'll slap you upside the head!
